Our Favorite Tips & Tricks for Hair Growth

As weather prepares to shift from winter to spring, now is a great time to start thinking about what things to do to help your hair grow. On average, our hair grows about half an inch every month which is about six inches every year. While there aren't any magic formulas or pills to make it grow faster or longer overnight, we can use products and practices to make it stronger and prevent breakage in order to retain the length.



Eat a healthy diet.

Getting in your fair share of vitamins and nutrients through the foods you eat plays a significant role in hair health. Vitamins A, B, C, D, and E are high on the list and can be found in foods like sweet potatoes (A), seeds and nuts (B), berries (C), shrimp (D) and avocados (E). Spinach is a great source of iron, beans and meat contain the protein your hair needs, and fatty fish like salmon are ideal for omega-3. If you only eat plant-based foods, find a vegan-friendly supplement so you can still reap the benefits of these vitamins and nutrients.


Drink plenty of water.

Think of your hair as a plant. Plants that don't get enough water don't grow. It's common to subscribe to the eight glasses a day notion, but that may not be enough for you. How much water you need is determined by how much you weigh. Here's the formula: Take your weight in pounds and divide it by two. That number represents how many ounces of water you should drink every day. For example, someone who is 160 pounds should drink 80 ounces (which is 10 cups) of water every day. You don't have to weigh in daily. Hopping on the scale once a week is a good measurement.


Take a biotin supplement.

Biotin comes from Vitamin B7. Even if you're eating healthy, it doesn't hurt to take a biotin supplement. Biotin is what gives your hair thick and lustrous volume as it assists with cell growth and rebuilding tissue. Aside from your hair, biotin is also an amazing supplement for your energy, mood, brain, and thyroid.


Try collagen.

Collagen acts as an antioxidant that fights damage caused by free radicals like pollution, stress, alcohol, and other unhealthy environmental or habitual factors. The older we get, the weaker our body's defense becomes against free radicals. Taking collagen can help supplement the body's fight and, as a result, make our hair less prone to thinning and greying.
